John Sununu bit off more than he can chew when he started ranting at CNN’s Soledad O’Brien Tuesday afternoon. In a rare display of journalistic back bone in the face of right-wing accusations of liberal bias, O’Brien essentially told a conservative bully to take his propaganda and stuff it.
After pointing out, correctly, that Mitt Romney’s plans for Medicare are very similar to Paul Ryan’s “Kill Medicare” budget, Sununu immediately launched into spin mode and blamed…Obama?
Via Raw Story:
“But it’s very different,” Sununu insisted. “For example, when Obama gutted Medicare by taking $717 billion out of it, the Romney plan does not do that. The Ryan plan mimicked part of the Obama package there, the Romney plan does not. That’s a big difference.”
O’Brien took him to task for his flagrant lie and she was quite blunt about it.
“I understand that this is a Republican talking point because I’ve heard it repeated over and over again,” O’Brien observed. “These numbers have been debunked, as you know, by the Congressional Budget Office. … I can tell you what it says. It [Obama's plan] cuts a reduction in the expected rate of growth, which you know, not cutting budgets to the elderly. Benefits will be improved.”
Sununu’s blood pressure visibly jumped at the sheer insolence of a newscaster debunking Republican lies on-air, live, with the Republican still on the screen!
“Soledad, stop this!” Sununu shouted. “All you’re doing is mimicking the stuff that comes out of the White House and gets repeated on the Democratic blog boards out there.”
