There’s something that’s been forgotten in the war on women. As Republicans attempt to circumvent Roe v. Wade by any means necessary, and as they continue their march on the path to making abortion illegal in this country, they’ve all ducked the most important question and, many times, refused to answer it altogether: If abortion becomes illegal in this country and a woman has an illegal abortion, should she be prosecuted for a crime?
That question is what all of this is boiling down to, but even the hardcore of the anti-choice movement gets a little queasy when it comes to the idea of prosecuting a woman for terminating a pregnancy, which would be illegal and a crime in their perfect world. You would think that, judging by the militant attitudes of some most anti-choicers, their answers would be very clear. They equate abortion with murder, so you would expect the response to that question to be, We want to outlaw it and make it illegal. It’s a crime, so do the time.
Not so much.
