As Texas faced some of the worst wildfires in its history and a severe drought crisis that has caused the federal government to declare the entire state a disaster area, its governor was schmoozing with well-heeled conservative donors in Vail, Colorado at a retreat organized by the right-wing industrialist Koch brothers. Gov. Rick Perry (R) left his state without notifying constituents or the press and dodged inquiries into his whereabouts. The media had to resort to tracking the tail number of a private plane owned by one of Perry’s major campaign donors. “This was an opportunity to talk about the economic success in Texas,” a spokesperson said, denying that the trip had anything to do with a potential presidential run.

...

Meanwhile, in Florida, days after declaring a state of emergency for his state’s own climate crisis, Gov. Rick Scott (R) disappeared over the weekend, failing to disclose his whereabouts in his public schedule and refusing to respond to numerous press inquiries. Yesterday, Scott finally admitted he left the state without informing his constituents to attend the the Koch summit. Florida press spent most of the past few days trying to track down the rogue governor while more than 300 wildfires continue to burn in the state

Koch Industries spent $1.2 million helping elect Republican governors in 2010 alone, and have spent millions more pushing their radical anti-union, anti-health care agenda in the states. In response, the AFL-CIO published a guide called “8 Signs Your Governor Has A Koch Problem.” Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) also attended the Koch event.

How sad that these Republican governors care more about the Koch Brothers than they do about the citizens of their own states.

The Kochs have been busy buying up congresspeople, supreme court "Justices", state legislatures for sometime now No surprise they are purchasing Governors, too.

Could you imagine if the was George Soros doing this? Buy politicians for the purpose of enriching himself further, with his hands entwined on a plutcratic bent on ALL facets of government, from local to state to federal cronies?

The right wing billionaires and uber wealth are looking to stomp wage earning Americans on the neck..till all youll be paid is company script.

I dont begrudge their success. They were born on 3rd base and think they hit a homerun. I know the Other Koch brothers, the ones who were screwed over by these neo-Birchers following their right wing daddies ideological bent. But for as much as they make per year...it isn't enough...When your wealth overnight increase a few milimeters when you wake up theres grow 1 foot everyday growing faster enabling them to buy more politicians who will help them hoarde more of their wealth so when they die, their kids will be even more threatening to our Democratic Republic of your kids than they are to ours today.

Rick Perry is a piece of crap! I don't understand how he got re-elected, I sure as hell didn't vote for him. He bitches about the federal government then whines when he feels the federal government isn't helping us with the wild fires, when in fact they have. He's nothing but a George W. Bush wanna-be. I can only feel sorry for those who have Rick Scott as their governor, believe me I feel their pain.

So the governor is now the fire chief/Marshal? Are the supposed to do what for a wildfire?

i would think he would be monitoring the Emergency Mgmt Agency's progress and effectiveness, making sure they had the resources they need, and making sure the people he appointed are doing their job. If I were governor, I would probably be surveying damages, seeing that supplies get to citizens in need, and updating the citizens on the status of things as well.

Gov. Rick Perry (R) left his state without notifying constituents or the press and dodged inquiries into his whereabouts. The media had to resort to tracking the tail number of a private plane owned by one of Perry’s major campaign donors. "This was an opportunity to talk about the economic success in Texas," a spokesperson said, denying that the trip had anything to do with a potential presidential run.

How strange, how curious. I wonder if that Perry spokesperson happened to be Katherine Cesinger. In connection with Perry's upcoming prayer rally ("The Response") scheduled for August in Houston, inquiries were made earlier this month as to whether or not Perry agreed with Bryan Fischer's statements about homosexuals, and Cesinger responded as follows: "Governor Perry is looking forward to the event. AFA [the American Family Association] is an organization that promotes safe and strong families. These controversies aren’t relevant to the event; Governor Perry is focused on what he is trying to accomplish, which is bringing America together in prayer for the nation."

If not Cesinger, then yet another Perry spokesperson on a Perry team loaded with Perry people who specialize in answering questions about Perry's intentions and associations by not answering them at all — a harbinger of very troubling things to come for America if he is ever elected to an office higher than that of Governor of Texas.

Governor Rick Scott (R) of Florida said that he had given details to anyone who had asked him about his trip to Vail: his wife, his Uncle Herb, and the mailman? He and Rick Perry are apparently incapable of giving a straight answer.

um Lynn? There is quite a difference between Obama going abroad to meet with our allies and attend the G8 conference and these two guys going to a party given by someone who's bought your allegiance. I hope you are able to see that. This describes his itinerary:

...the trip is, of course, primarily focused on international rather than personal affairs, including the global economy; counter-terrorism efforts; peace in the Middle East, and other security initiatives, including START.

"This is a very important trip for the President to reaffirm our core alliances in the world, our European allies," said Rhodes. "Just about everything that we’re doing in the world we’re collaborating closely with our European allies." Read the full briefing here.

The trip includes the President's first State Visit to the United Kingdom, the second country on the itinerary, where he will be honored by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with all the pomp and cuircumstance such a visit implies, which will include staying at Buckingham Palace in London. President Obama will also address Parliament, and host his own dinner in honor of Her Majesty, at Winfield, the home of the American Ambassador. Then it's on to Deauville, France, to attend the G8, hosted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Warsaw, Poland for more strategic talks. And another Presidential dinner...

I wonder what economic success they are speaking of? Maybe it is all the min. wage jobs in Texas, maybe he is looking to the future of all the uneducated / under educated youth hitting the streets looking for a job, maybe it is all the recently laid off teachers, or could it be his success in pulling funding from the poor, sick and elderly. Yes, Rick has a lot of success to brag about.

If the good Governors want to claim a business reason for their trips, can they then explain why their trips were undisclosed? I mean, if a politician is going somewhere to generate business for his/her constituents, usually they trumpet the fact. Not pull a Mark Sanford and try to fall off the radar. Falling of the radar by a state Governor is usually (always?) associated with covert, clandestine, and likely immoral behavior.

They are selling out America and the American people.

This 1% of the wealthiest people are in control over our now and future. When did becoming a president, senator, and govenor become the Lottery Winning Ticket for all our political figures.

This is criminal when they make money off the rest of us, and then screw the people over and over again with budget cuts and programs, and then they continue to keep raising their salaries.

Polosi, Crybaby Bohner lives off the tax payers along with all our presidents that have gotten greedy and robbing the Federal Reserves and billing the people.

REVOLUTION! They see it coming and this is why all these secret (yet exposed) stories are being held at odd hours of the night and early mornings. They are preparing for what the Walmart family did with their underground mansion, helicopter, and full security day and night. They know they are not liked and they know that people are standing in line to take back what our government has stolen from the people.

Hey Demo.... it is no surprise that Perry met with the Kochs. He has been a member in good standing of ALEC, funded by the Kochs and other corporate types for more than 30 years. They are the ones whose lobbyists write the laws that they push through congress. Laws like the impossible 3-strikes law wherein one can go to prison for life for stealing a cheap bottle of wine or food. Or the "enhanced sentencing" which loads more and more years onto punishment at taxpayer expense all the while telling their constituents they are protecting the public, meanwhile enriching the prison industrial complex ad infinitum. It is all for corporate profits. They behave as if we owe them our taxes for being allowed to live here.

All for one and that "one" is not us.

An absolute conflict Pacific Northwest Blogger. I think Scott is in direct conflict with the Florida constitution. Voters in every state need to start fighting back for the rights of individuals, freedoms lost to corporatist, the and for preservation of a "true" democracy.

As Americans and citizens, such conflicts of interest and violation of ethics should not be tolerated in our public officials, including Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a shill for the Koch Brother. He has tarnished the position.

I've seen a bit of a dent. Folks at Harris Teeter(supermarkets) have been pushing GP products like Brawny and some have been bypassing the on-sale products. Some folks are fed up with the Kochtopus family.

I shop Harris Teeter - but I buy most of my paper products at Costco. Of course now I understand the GP product promotions!

(My point in #10.1 was that GP is a tiny part of the Koch empire.)

What part of NC are you in?

It probably wouldn't make a difference simply because so many are INdifferent to what is happening. I have already had a personal boycott of Koch bro products for over a year, and I have NEVER shopped at Walmart! But I am just one American who cares about my country. I know there are millions more, I just wish they would be more proactive about it.

For self-satisfaction I will not purchase any Koch Ind household products, however, in reality if thousands of people did the same it would just be a petty annoyance to Koch. Koch Ind is a mega-conglomerate, a boycott would have no effect on their bottom line. I tell as many people as I can to avoid using Rick Scott's Solantic Clinics. Again, all I get is the satisfaction. What does seem to have an effect on them is bad press. They have a sensitivity to that. I remember Rachel Maddow saying that they can pump millions of $$$ into campaigns but it still comes down to one person- one vote. Staying home is how we got Scott.

It's worth the effort, even if it ends up having little more effect than settling one's conscience.

My guess is that even if average consumers were to completely unify and have a 100% effective boycott of products the Koch brothers produce, they'd just have their sponsored governors and some future sponsored president set up no-bid contracts for supplying government offices and the military with $3000-a-roll toilet paper and $5000-a-roll paper towels, along with whatever their other non-GP companies produce, while making sure those same politicians continue to run in a platform that includes the plank of "cutting wasteful government spending."

We CAN'T because the repugs control both of the state houses, they killed the recall bill. What we need to do is get him impeached, my only problem is that his lt gov is a black female republican. And yes that seems oxymoronic. All I can presuppose is she likes the abuse, being treated like trash, and being the token female and token black. Do we really want someone that filled with self-hatred, as to deliberately place herself in a political party that despises her for being who she is, in the governor's seat?

The corporate owned national media does not provide information. It deflects and distracts with sensationalism. The indie press and bloggers are the best bets for rooting out informaton of paramount importance to we, the people.

Whatever the Koch's own, including politicians, is theirs to be used as the Kochs see fit. Their world order is dangerous. The politicians who are playing by Koch dictates will be crushed the same as the rest of us if the Kochs win.

A lot of those calling themselves journalists are little more than the good old fashioned GOSSIPS and much of what they parade around as news is total misrepresentation at best... fabrication at worst, shallow and manipulative trying to fool themselves into believing they are important and pridefully patting themselves on the back as controlling opinion, just like the good old-fashioned neighborhood gossips, only the neighborhood is much bigger.

Just a few questions before I can comment in an intelligent manner.

Do either of their states have any requirements that the Governors remain within the state 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Do either of these Governors have any freedom to choose what they do in presumably "their personal time" on the weekend? Is it customary to charge someone with being "absent, without leave" on the weekend?

Do the commentors here seriously expect (and I presume, demand) the Governors of their states have any real impact on the climate problems that their states are experiencing? Should Perry and Scott be out there with buckets putting out the fires? Should they be driving water trucks to help alleviate the drout? Is that the real expectation "of what they should have been doing" here?

Sure they can. What's disturbing is the fact that they attended a meeting organized by folks who are among the very largest donors to the GOP and apparently tried to keep the fact that they went a secret. That smells more than a little fishy to me.

        OIGA:

Unless they are breaking the law, I don't care where they got their money. I'm not into wealth envy or coveting my neighbor's ass.

So, it's okay for the Koch brothers to have money and interfere with politics and politicians, but not for Soros?!? Be careful, OIGA, your blatant hypocrisy is showing. The Kochs are under scrutiny right now, but Soros was a target well before that, and by those on the right. And for doing far LESS than the Kochs have been doing for decades.

If a group of Dems left their states during emergencies like this to go have a secret summit with Soros, you on the right would be screaming continuously from the rooftops (and all over Faux Noise) about them being derelict in their duties. I've seen your posts all over the vine talking smack about Obama going anywhere, regardless of what/where he was going, but you defend THIS?!? IOKIYAR

        Hypocrite!

I know they don't like my country. I know they can't rest as long as orthodox America exists. I know they despise Christians, Jews, and Muslims. I know they love to pit Americans against each other as they watch in glee.

For you to disparage roughly half the population of this country, the "Marxist...greedy, hateful, brutal left" as you put it, is disgusting. How is it that you are so arrogant and self-rightous that you can so blithely question any other American's patriotism as you just did?!? Just who the hell do you think you are?!? The right, including yourself, seems to think that you can question the left's love of country and that we on the left will just take it. You rightwingers have been doing it for YEARS now, and it's repulsive. "Lefties" have fought and bled for this country, and I can assure you that our love of country runs just as deep as yours despite the fact that we have a different political ideology. Questioning the patriotism of others makes you a "better American" exactly HOW?

Bow down to your corporate masters if you must, but do NOT question the patriotism of those of us who don't. To do so is, in and of itself, contrary to what this country allegedly stands for.

Wear your hypocrisy hat with pride, if you can. And welcome to the "ignore" button. You've proved repetedly that you can't use logic and fact to argue your point, but use blanket hyperbole and ad hominem attacks instead. You are worth no more time.

Did Obama, Reid, and Pelosi right those alleged Republican wrongs during their 2 year reign of terror 2009 to 2011, when they had the filibuster-proof Democratic Congress and Democratic Presidency? What a foolish charge you made. Are you admitting the Democratic party duped you into thinking they were going to remedy all of the perceived ills just as soon as they had a chance? Why didn't your gand of Marxists squash the Koch brother's funded laws during the 2 years they could have done whatever they wanted?

Seems the Democratic party of Marxists enjoy the same perks the Koch brothers allegedly enjoy.

So, it's okay for the Koch brothers to have money and interfere with politics and politicians, but not for Soros?

Soros is a Marxist with allegiances beyond America. Soros is a convicted felon, a cheater. Soros does not like America. I can't stop Democrats from taking his money and assisting him in destroying America, but he's not a good American, whereas the Koch brothers are virtuous solid Americans.

        LMAO!

We are now in the 111th session of Congress, and it appears that a new record will be set once again. To date, there have been 76 motions filed to end filibusters, resulting in 40 votes on cloture, and 40 instances of it being invoked. If we project these numbers to the end of the 111th session of the US Senate, that would result in a record number of cloture invocations, and near record levels of motions along with actual votes.

        Graphs and everything, here!

The right, including yourself, seems to think that you can question the left's love of country and that we on the left will just take it.

I don't just think I can question the left's love of country, I do question it. What's with the quest to fundamentally change America? That's not patriotic. That was the USSR goal for America with the cold war. Why code talk around the destroy-and-replace agenda of the left? That is the Chinese and the Soros goal for America is today.

I have no interest in any relationship with the Marxist leftists. My ancestors moved away from them to come to America and now they infest here. Most unfortunately, there is no escape from them, so I am forced to face them, and I will do so bravely and to the end. Keep your paws off my freedom and liberty. Keep your eyes off my kids, keep your hand out of my bank account, keep your brute authoritarian self out of my home and my business, keep your central controlling authority ideology out of my doctors office and my insurance purchases, quit using my name and my kids names as co-signers for loans I don't want for spending I don't want. Leave me and my family the hell alone. Do you get it now? Americans do not need you and do not want your Marxist dictatorial wares.

And you will take it. You will obey the law. You will yield to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. You will allow Americans their lives, the peace, freedom, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and for those that choose it, solitude, all as God granted us, not as some Marxist punk President decides we deserve or not.

We know what the radical leftists want, wish for, long for, lust for, that major physical conflict in which they plan to accomplish the eradication of those they want to overthrow, to inflict pain and suffering on Christians, Jews, capitalists, conservatives, those opposing tyranny, those that don't look to government for their salvation.

Bow down to your Marxist government masters if you must, a sign of patriotism deficit.

You will not ignore my posts. The left is compelled to attack. You will check back to see if your feeble rant was effective, whether it garnered votes from fellow patriotism deficit Marxists.

The filibuster worked because the leftist agenda was so radical even some Democrats and the "independent" couldn't bring themselves to hurt their country with the radical extreme leftist agenda of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi.

The Democrats had a filibuster proof Senate. If the Democrats had all agreed on something it would pass. I can't help it that the Democrats didn't agree to undo the alleged Koch paid for laws that only Kochs could benefit from. That's your party's problem. My point is that the Democrats could have, but didn't, address the Koch brothers when they had full, unstoppable power, because the allegations are BS and the Democrats get as much or more from any existing cronyism laws on the books.

The Marxist left, the greedy, hateful, brutal left is what attracts my attention, no matter their target. I know they are up to no good. I know they don't like my country. I know they can't rest as long as orthodox America exists. I know they despise Christians, Jews, and Muslims. I know they love to pit Americans against each other as they watch in glee.

What, specifically, have democrats done to be classified as Marxist? What has the Obama administration done that others have not done that would cause you to use this classification. Anyone can say "they're up to no good", "they're trying to destroy out country", etc.

Other than health-care reform, which I know the right doesn't agree with already, but that's a whole other discussion, what specifically (not generalized vagueness) has Obama done that you consider Marxist? Can you give me an example, as opposed to an opinion?

Truth violation. Get real your outrage is weak.... First the talk about the debt is completely control by the GOP.

How do you even begin to talk with people who take orders from foreign corporations and local billionaires.

That oil release by IEA is lowering your family and neighbors cost for gas . So you liked high gas prices huh. Well you certainly would not like it if those gas prices went above $4.50/gal forever.... I guess you probably want those oil corporations to keep your money as profit. Check the crack spread . It's narrowing......

Jake, 22.3 - Tell me - Obama gets his orders and money from unions and billionaires like George Soros and Hollywood. And he got more money from Wall Street in 2008. So, tell me, why is THAT OK? And, think back and remember history. Obama and the Dems controlled that Congress for TWO years - 2 years. They did nothing to cut spending or pass a budget or deal with the debt. No, they pushed the problems onto the Repubs so they could blame the Repubs. They knew that the majority of this country is mindless and would forget; they would listen to their talking points and like little drones would go out and repeat their message. I think your outrage is rather weak.

Oh, and as for the release of the gas. Um, read up. If I am not mistaken, it went onto the open market. NO guarantee it came back to us. And, BEFORE he even did that, prices were going down. Heck, they were down by about $.20 to $.40 per gallon anyway and guess what - they are back up to what they were back in June. Besides, that small amount did not have any impact on long-term prices. Do you really believe that essentially a few days' worth of oil is going to change prices permanently?! That is unbelievable that you could honestly believe his dumbass hype. There was no crisis or need to do that. It was a political ploy to fake people like you into believing he is doing something. He can do something on a permanent basis - allow MORE DRILLING.

Oh, and based on your theory on why they should be ousted, well, read my post at 25. Your Messiah Obama has been to a very expensive Demo fundraiser very recently when his ass should have been at the debt talks. And when the oil spill happened, he was out golfing. Oh, and let's not forget date night in Chicago with his nasty wife at a time our economy was on the brink right after he was sworn in. He was nowhere to be found.

... but you don't care how the unions own him or ...

I keep reading claims about the powerful unions but maybe I've lived in a right-to-work state so long that I'm out of touch, so I did a little fact checking.

Union membership is about 10.9% in the U.S., ranging from a high of 24.2% in New York to a low of 3.2% in North Carolina (I'm so not surprised). (source) In 2008, President Obama won the states of New York and North Carolina - opposite ends of the union membership spectrum. How do you explain that?

Kate 23.7 - It's not their votes, it's the money they can put behind him to gain votes in other states. New York was won because of NYC and the fact it is liberal and Democratic. I can't believe No. Carolina put him in but guess they won't the next time - especially in light of the Boeing case. That's in So. Carolina, but it shows how this admin. feels and where their allegiance lies.

No. Carolina should realize that with this kind of admin., their ability to attract employers is going to be reduced because it is not pro-union. Why would they want a president who sicks the NLRB on any employer who wants to produce jobs in No. Carolina because he has to keep the unions happy? Actually, why would ANY state want a president who feels he can tell a business where they can and cannot work, and essentially is pushing for every business to be unionized (card check, anyone?).

I think No. Carolina is more conservative and will revert back to its roots in 2012.

The GOP lambasted Obama for being in Brazil during the start of the civil war in Libya, and yet here's Perry doing precisely the same thing and this man wants to be president? And by the way, BLD, there were several democrats who were critical of the President for his actions so it's hard to say that it's partisan.
