The retirement of Sen. Jeff Bingaman — the low-key New Mexico Democrat known for his ability to strike centrist deals with Republicans — raises questions about the long-term impact his departure will have on the development of energy policy in future Congresses.
For the last decade, Bingaman has been the top Democrat on the Energy panel, working in an unusually close bipartisan manner with Republicans, most notably former Chairman Pete Domenici, a fellow New Mexican. The two helped shepherd through massive energy legislation in 2005 and the bipartisan Clean Energy Act measure in 2007.

I have great respect for Jeff Bingaman and am very disappointed that he is retiring. We will miss him.

The retirement of Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) the low-key New Mexico raises questions about the long-term impact his departure will have on the development of energy policy in future Congresses.
Sandia National Laboratories in Abuquerque and Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico are both working to develop a practical Hydrogen Fuel Cell for use in automobiles. It is my hope that the retirement of Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) does hinder the development of a practical Hyrogen Fuel Cell.
